What is On-Page SEO?

And How it Differs From Off-Page

SEO is one of our favorite subjects on the Bear River Blog. That's because SEO is the single most profitable investment we can make into our websites. You may have heard us (or fast-talking salesmen) refer to both on-page and off-page SEO. If you're wondering what the difference is, you've found the right article. If you're looking for info on what SEO is in general, check out What is SEO?.

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the discipline of utilizing proper website habits, research, and construction to improve our findability online. The result is better rankings, higher listing on search pages, and, ultimately, more sales. SEO is a broad topic, and on-page SEO is the most important, readily-enacted phase of a successful SEO campaign.

Off-page SEO is the practice of developing relationships and links through other sites. In our experience, the best way to get links, shares, and referrals from other sites is to build great sites and engage in proven strategies to begin with. Check back with us later to learn more about off-page SEO!

So, logically, that's what we do! Everything else (traffic, referrals, and sales) naturally follows.

What Does On-Page SEO Entail?

On-page SEO refers specifically to making useful, sensible changes to both the content of our webpage (the words on it, for instance) as well as the programming language behind it (HTML). In the old days, search engine "optimizers" learned how to abuse both the content and HTML on a page to trick Google into giving high rankings to a page that may not be particularly great from a user perspective. Slowly but surely, and to our benefit, that's changing - after all, if we get the best, most relevant content available when we use Google, we are more likely to use it again. Everyone wins.

Google and the the other less popular search engines (sorry, Bing - it's a fact) are developing methods to weed out search engine abuse (keyword stuffing, paid links, etc) and are instead focusing on delivering useful, relevant content to searchers.

In our case, those searchers are prospective buyers. In the modern era, on-page SEO is basically the practice of making a web page make sense through proper use of headers, which break up the content, titles, which tell search engines and user what a page is about, and content, which is the meat and potatoes of a page.

What That Means to Us

Technical aspects aside, this bascially means that our best bet for a successful search optimization campaign is sensible, transparent use of HTML and high-quality, honest content. On-page SEO requires skill, patience, and experience. The days of tricking the web are over. From Bear River Web Design's perspective, this is great - it means clients who want long lasting, profitable results are more likely to get them from our proven system of creating great, transparent websites and SEO campaigns. Essentially, the web is becoming a better moderated, more meaningful place for us all. As a result, honest businesses with great products and services (like you) have a better chance than ever to make a good living on the web.
